Check on your hard-shelled peeps

It’s almost a year now staying at home, quarantining. A YEAR. Personally, I have gone through waves of emotions on the daily. Being a Gen-X’er and an only child growing up, I have always been ok with being on my own, having solitary time. I enjoyed it. But this pandemic has taken a toll. It’s depressing. And I know it has affected my son. He told me it has definitely changed him. We talk freely with each other about how we’re doing. Regardless if you are a self-proclaimed introvert, we humans need to physically see other humans. We are social beings. We need to be able to reach out and hug our loved ones. The other person in our small bubble is my husband. He is not in tune with his emotions. Overall, I would say that he is handling the pandemic pretty well. But is that because he is the “man” of the house and feels that’s how he should portray himself? Granted he has said, of course this all depressing! But then he moves along. He had older parents that died when he was a teen and young adult. There wasn’t a lot of talking/dealing/expressing feelings in his household growing up. It was just a different environment being from another country. He played outside or went to school. Mom cooked and dad worked. No real time for deep convos. So knowing that and knowing him, I paid attention. I know he won’t admit to any “fears,” personally. Or admit he is feeling down for no damn reason. Just the other day, I asked him what was wrong as his mood changed quickly, and he said “Nothing, I’m just irritated.” At 1st I was a little put off by this quick change in his mood and then I reminded myself. The sadness can come on at any time. He doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve like my son and I do. And that’s ok. It’s perfectly normal to feel scared, anxious, sad, concerned during this worrisome and unclear time in our lives. Just the influx of information that changes constantly is enough to make someone feel lost. So knowing he doesn’t like to talk “feelings”, I will show him in other ways. I give him more hugs (but not too many, or he’ll wonder what’s up 😉). I’ll sit with him, even if he’s reading his emails and I’m working on my blog. I’ll watch something he likes that’s uninteresting to me and remind our son to do the same. I’ll let him know I’m here if he ever does want to vent. The hard-shelled, guarded people in your lives. Don’t forget to check on them too. 💓 By: Liv D.

Once upon a time

Remember when we went to big arena concerts? I miss those days. I wonder when we’ll be able to do this again. This shot was from the Depeche Mode Global Spirit Tour, Oct. 8, 2017. Ironically, the song they’re performing is Enjoy The Silence. One of my all time favorite DM songs. 30 years old now.

Button fly jeans

Want to conceal a tummy? Opt for button fly jeans. Being a curvy gal, I find it helps. 🙂 This pair that I’m wearing is from Wit & Wisdom. I got them on a super sale from Nordstrom. W & W are comfy jeans but they do stretch out a bit easily and run a tad big. In general, you should wash jeans inside out to preserve their color, on a cold setting. Kut from the Kloth is a great brand and hold up a bit better. Click here for Wit and here for Kut.

You.

Car Handbag Holder

This is genius. The Car Cache`. It solves the problem of taking up room on the passenger front seat. It keeps your purse or bag easily accessible and holds it upright. And I personally never ever place my purse on any floor, but if you do, this will solve the problem of the contents of your purse spilling out. It will also keep it clean. No more straining to reach it from the back seat. AND it’s woman made! Again, how did I live without this product? And why didn’t I think of it? Brava. Click here to purchase. *Please note the cute packaging. It’s just so fun.

Clarisonic Face Device

I don’t know how I lived without my Clarisonic. It just cleans my face SO WELL. It feels relaxing and I see a huge improvement in my skin appearance. Funny but true story. I purchased one for my mom. She is known for not meshing well with electronics. Like at all. Things go haywire around her. And she also has the bad luck of loving a product, and then soon after, it’s discontinued. Happens constantly. And she admits it. But she LOVES the Clarisonic. I gave it to her at the beginning of Sept., 2020. Well, at the end of Sept., 2020, Clarisonic SHUTS DOWN all operations. Oh, we laughed and laughed. I found one for ya’ll on this site, CurrentBody. It’s not the exact one I have, but it is fancier, has great reviews and currently on sale! I use different face washes with it, but my latest fav is Sugar Strawberry by Fresh. It’s a light exfoliant so it can be used daily. Smells heavenly. There are a wide range of brush heads that can be interchanged depending on your area of concern.

Shackets!

I had a friend request that I do a post on popular clothing items for 2021. I was a bit perplexed myself as we haven’t been able to go anywhere this last year and what’s new in fashion was not high on my radar. I scaled back my shopping tremendously. All of my clothes sat in my closet patiently waiting to be worn again. One item that I think we can all get on board with while we still shelter in place is a “shacket.” A slightly thicker ‘shirt’ but not quite a ‘jacket.’ It can be worn year round as it’s easy to layer. Every store has them (might be in category: Overshirt) and it works for ALL ages. You can wear it with jeans and a t-shirt or leggings and a turtleneck. Or get super comfy and throw it on over sweats for a Netflix re-binge of Schitt’s Creek. Below you’ll find a few casual ones and a few “dressier” ones that can be worn with wide leg pants or a skirt and tights. Find them here: Free People Zara Nordstrom ASOS

The Weeknd makes a good point

I love The Weeknd’s music a lot. And I absolutely love his new song “Save Your Tears.” It has an 80’s OMD vibe to it. He recently was on the American Music Awards performing a few songs from his new album After Hours, and his face was all bandaged up. In his “Save Your Tears” video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXYlFuWEuKI, his face is revealed and it’s shocking. It looks like he’s had plastic surgery done. Like, a lot of it. But it’s just prosthetics and make up. He references in one of his other songs from the album that “all LA girls look the same.” I don’t want to critique people who have had plastic surgery. But I don’t love the idea of us all wanting to look “a certain way; perfect.” Like, what is perfect? The tiny nose, full lips, big eyes? I have to admit something. When I was around 21 or 22, I went to a plastic surgeon to discuss possibly getting a nose job. It scared the living crap out of me when they mentioned having to break my nostril bone. Um, no thank you. Luckily I didn’t do it for many reasons. I finally matured and realized my nose is what makes me unique. That was also with the encouraging words from my mom and good friends. And my son happened to get my nose. I look at him and see a bit of me. 🙂 We have to embrace our unique beauty. We are our own best friends and we need to love ourselves, inside and out. There is no one like you. By: Liv D.

A Natural Powder Deodorant

I’m always on the hunt for a natural aluminum-free deodorant that works. I currently use Native and it’s ok. I recently found this product by Madame Lemy which I LOVE. The packaging is what grabbed me initially. The one I bought has a lovely light rose scent in a powder puff. They also have lime, lemon and lavender. It is all-natural, vegan, refillable and cruelty-free. I use it after my Native in the morning or during the day if I need a refresher. Check it here: Madame Lemy.

My Adidas

So, recently I posted to my personal SM, my fresh new kicks I bought for the new year. My Adidas. I LOVE them. I had several friends ask me where I got them. Then, they needed to know, well, how do I style them? There are SO many ways you can wear Adidas. With ankle jeans, boyfriend jeans, rolled up a few times. With a knit dress, knit skirt, jumpsuit culotte or a suit pant. With sweats or jogger pants. And if you want to dress them up and have somewhere fun to go (hopefully soon!!), pair with a frilly tulle skirt, or pleather skirt, graphic tee and jean jacket. You really can’t go wrong! But please wear them with a low cut ankle sock. The real star showing should be the shoes. And you!
